Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A KEI Truck?

A KEI truck, also known as a "kei-class truck" or "mini truck," is a small, lightweight vehicle originally designed in Japan to meet the country's strict kei car regulations. These compact trucks are known for their efficiency, versatility, and maneuverability, making them ideal for tasks like farming, construction, and light hauling. KEI trucks typically have a 660cc engine, seating for two, and a durable flatbed, making them practical yet economical vehicles for both work and recreation.

Can I Register My Imported Vehicle In California?

In California, registering an imported vehicle that was never EPA-certified comes with specific requirements. Even if the vehicle is over 25 years old and purchased from another state, California mandates that it meet EPA standards for its production year and pass a smog test before registration. The cost for this process typically ranges from $7,500 to $15,000 for most JDM vehicles and is paid directly to the laboratory. These vehicles do not require OBD II compliance for California emissions, as indicated on the ARB label. To qualify, the cars must be nearly stock and in excellent mechanical condition. California has a state-specific environmental agency known as the Air Resources Board (ARB), commonly referred to as the California Air Resources Board. Unlike other states, California has the authority to establish its own emissions standards, separate from the Federal EPA. For direct-import vehicles over 21 years old, while they may be federally legal to import, the ARB governs their registration process through the California DMV. This adds complexity to the process, making it challenging to provide a clear answer without addressing all the considerations outlined above.

What Title Does My KEI Truck Come With?

Your KEI truck comes with an Export Certificate, which is the Japanese equivalent of a vehicle title. Since the Export Certificate is primarily in Japanese, most states require a translated copy to process the vehicle's registration. This document serves as proof of ownership and includes essential details needed for registration in the United States.

Can I Title This In My State Outside Of California?

Each state has its own unique requirements for title and registration, so it’s important to review your local regulations for accurate information. On a federal level, vehicles that are over 25 years old are exempt from NHTSA regulations, while those over 21 years old in their original configuration are exempt from EPA requirements.
